Types of Turbo (Part-2)
TYPES OF TURBO (PART-2)
(1) Single turbo
(2) TwinTurbo
(3) Twin scroll turbo
(4)Variable twin scroll turbo
(5) Electric Turbo
(6)Variable- geometry turbocharger
(4)Variable twin scroll turbo
Variable twin-scroll turbos combine the technology of VGTs and twin-scroll turbos. It uses the same principle of high and low Air ratio .The variable twin-scroll turbo is a combination of twin-scroll turbo and variable geometry turbo.
*Advantages*
1)This turbo allows good high-end performance in any vehicle .
2)These are cheaper than variable geometry turbo, so it allows gasoline turbocharging.
*Disadvantage*
1)It requires a higher cost and is complex compared to a single turbo or common twin-scroll turbo
2)This technique has been worked with before, but it is not sustainable in the production world.
(5) Electric Turbo
The electric turbos are the latest and recently added to the turbocharger industry. It is completely different from the other types of turbochargers. They are used to reduce the turbo lag and assist a normal turbocharger at low engine speeds.
This is done by attaching an electric motor that rotates the compressor from the start and through the lower revs until the power from the exhaust volume is sufficient to make the turbocharger work.
These types of turbochargers have one drawback is that it is quite expensive and complex. This turbocharger choice also allows for the consumed energy to be recovered and used to generate power.
*Advantages*
1)Turbo lag and exhaust gases are easily eliminated by connecting an electric motor directly to the compressor wheel.
2)The wasted energy is recovered by connecting an electric motor to an exhaust turbine.
*Disadvantage*
1)Higher costs are required and are complicated, as you must now consider the electric motor and ensure that it remains cool to prevent safety issues.(heat)
2) VGTs or twin scrolls can provide similar benefits at a significantly lower cost.
(6) Variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT)
Vgt can adjust the size of exhaust gases inlet and outlet to improve its efficiency and performance capabilities. The vgt design is a work of art consisting of a veins that can be adjusted to control the flow of the exhaust gases to the turbine the vgt veins are controlled by an actuator that adjusts the angle of veins based on the engine needs this allows the turbocharger to provide boost at lower engine speed.
*Advantages*
1) Reducing turbo lag and allowing for better control of exhaust and gas back pressure.
2)Engine speed providing the driver with smoother and more responsive Driving experience.
*Disadvantage*
1) Complicated and high cost mechanical system.
2) A VGT turbo fails when soot, carbon, rust, and corrosion build up in the turbine housing, causing the exhaust gases to seize up. Although repairing actuator valves can be costly in terms of both time and money, there are ways to troubleshoot valve issues without seeing a mechanic.
*Uses*
In trucks, VGTs are also used to control the ratio of exhaust recirculated back to the engine inlet .
